Luxenborg, Netherlands, Switzerland servers really slow??
« on: December 08, 2011, 11:35:46 AM »
It started a few days ago that the above mentioned servers became pretty slow. Now, the Netherlands and Luxenborg fully routed servers often time "time out" can't complete connection. Is it just me, or is something  going on?

P.S. I renewed my OpenVPN keys yesterday.

Cheers!

Have you updated your configs? Could you post your log here please? What IP do you get when you turn off the VPN and then check myip.dk ?

I am running Mint Linux (Ubuntu 10)
The U.S.-Surfing streaming VPN is working fine.

I renewed my subscription, down loaded the VPN Key then I use them to overwrite the previous OpenVPV configs.

When I turn off the VPN and check myip.dk I get my home I.P. address.  When using U.S.-Surfing streaming VPN, it shows 68.68.105.235

I am sorry, I don't know what my "log" is? Consider me to be your basic noob--especially when it comes to Linux.

Thanks for your assistance.

I have more information for what it is worth.

I am located in the western part of the U.S.

I checked the connection download speeds of the fully routed servers at Speedtest.net.

U.S.-Surfing streaming --11.24Mbps . Which is about as fast as I get without VPN.

Canada --4.32Mps.

Luxenborg-- VPN failed. Connect attempt timed out.

Netherlands-- .49Mbps. However, Speedtest.net said the server was located in Kuala Lumpur--whats up with that?

Switzerland-- .40Mbps. Again, Speedtest.net said the server was located in Kuala Lumpur.

Fully routed all-- VPN failed. Connect attempt timed out.

Thanks!!

If you are using network-manager-openvpn try to re import your conifgs for allrouted, netherlands, switzerland, and luxembourg.

If that does not work check my post for locking down debian based linux here http://www.bolehvpn.net/forum/index.php/topic,6571.msg36718.html#msg36718

There might be some stuff in there to try such as using actual ip's rather than server names. installing resolvconf etc..

What you might also want to do is grab the server names from the configs and ping them to determine if you are indeed having issues connecting to the servers or if it is a configuration issue. This will also help to determine which ones are faster for your location. Do this while not connected to vpn.

I had some issues connecting at first, note I am not located in the US. Also, I find the luxembourg and swiss servers to be really slow due to the way they route traffic. But all others nearly max out my bandwidth which is only 10.

I was told the reason speedtest says the servers are located in Kuala Lumpur is because that is the address listed in the servers registration.

Either way with Linux mint your are more than likely going to be having DNS Leaks, which might also be causing your issue with regards to your isp identifying a vpn connection and intervening (somewhat unlikely in the US).

Run this test here while connected under vpn and I bet you see your isp servers listed

Thanks for your reply.

I re-imported the configs with network manager-- no change, still slow as hell. The U.S. Streaming severs are still really fast. Canadian servers run about a 1/3 of my non-VPN speed of around 11.3Mbps.

The good news I don't appear to be leaking any DNS according to the links you provided. None of the test show my I.P. address. That goes for Switzerland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.  Sometime ago I changed my DNS sever address by following the directions found at <http://www.liberiangeek.net/2010/12/change-dns-server-address-ubuntu-10-0410-10-maverick-meerkat/>. I used OpenDNS DNS provider. I don't if that helped, but I figure it couldn't hurt.

I am going to have study a bit before I try to implement your solutions posted on the other thread.

So, the question still stands about why Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada and Luxembourg are now so slow when a couple weeks ago they  were quite fast?
