If either of these bills were passed, what affect would this have on bolehvpn since it is not based in the US? How would it affect Bolehvpn servers located in the US?

Well as the US server is only used for surfing/streaming I doubt it will have much of an impact however there are some possible ramifications depending on how it's enforced. As it is we don't recommend the US server for privacy use.

If anybody uses the server to download stuff from http download sites like Rapidshare, it may result in shutdown of the server since I am now responsible to make sure no one accesses HTTP download sites. As the responsibility lies with me, I most likely need to keep logs here but we'll cross the bridge when we get there. Not sure what I'll do if it comes to fruition.

SOPA would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime. I am not sure if this covers using a VPN to access US based content.

This is all based off my own opinion and should not be relied upon as legal advice :D

In any case, I'm against SOPA despite if it passes, it might be pretty good business for me lolz.

Over 2.2 million people around the world have signed an online petition at www.avaaz.org .  A 1.25 million petition was sent to the White House. We could help make a difference by signing it ourselves. Avaaz wants to reach 2.5 million signatures. Please go here:

Pity none of this addresses the underlying issues. So SOPA/PIPA will return.

TLDR version, if SOPA/PIPA was enacted as a Malaysian law, then if Reuben posted an excerpt of the PM's speech on You Tube and UMNO decided that they didn't like that, they could ask TMNut to alter their DNS such that no Malaysian user could visit www.youtube.com (well.. you'd just have to know the actual IP address..., yes the law is THAT stupid, or rather the writers think YOU are). For a time, the bills actually specified that TMNut would not just serve up "This site has been blocked due to SOPA/PIPA" but would actually redirect you to somewhere else, i.e. just like those people hijacking Maybank/Citibank customers. Yeah, they wanted a law so government could hijack your website. Who watches the Watchmen? Imagine if the Malaysian government decided to crack down on pirated DVDs... and someone reported that there was a vendor in Petaling Street selling a pirated copy of "American Idol, Season 1". The response under SOPA/PIPA would be for Bukit Aman to call out the GOF and block all roads, railways and tunnels leading to Petaling Street. The street vendor? Left alone. I'm sure the food vendors will be very happy though. And you can still walk there.

Frankly, I hoped SOPA/PIPA would pass. It would mean businesses like BolehVPN would profit by it, and many businesses would also move out of the US (The US has the highest absolute number of porn sites... go here to check. Ok so not all businesses would come to Malaysia... some will go to Singapore  ::)), But it won't last. Just as in Malaysia where we have certain groups whining about 'too much skin' or 'too much English', this sort of things tend to come and go, like Prohibition. SOPA/PIPA wouldn't last long before it got repealed but in the meantime, non-US entities would benefit and in addition, no one would ever trust the US again with so much control over the internet. A case of not knowing how important a thing is, until it's gone.

In the meantime, this bill has already snuck in under the radar... The Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 Again, TLDR version is simple, all US-based ISPs are to hold detailed user connection records for at least 18 months. If BolehVPN was a US company (or just had an office there, or did business within the USA), they would have to keep logs of everything you do while using the VPN, i.e. sites you visited/files downloaded/etc.

Meanwhile, all that fuss over SOPA/PIPA... and this sneaks through. I can defeat SOPA/PIPA just by googling the actual IP address of blocked sites but for this new bill, I'd actually have to make sure I never use a US company.

Just a heads-up folks. This is not over yet.
