Hi,
Am I able to use BolehVPN to access the UK VPN server so that I can watch BBC programs on iPlayer?
Has anyone does it before? I've already purchased a trial account to try this out.

hi reuben,
i tried setting up the vpn as per installation instructions but the bbc iplayer website and the app says i m not in the UK even when the VPN is on.
any special settings to connect to the UK VPN?

Which connection were u connected to? Could you show me the log?

Hi Reuben,
I checked the IP and it says I'm using a California IP address. I just set up the VPN using the instructions found on http://www.bolehvpn.net/pptp.php#idevices cause that's the one I found for iPad.
If there is another set of instructions, could you kindly direct me to it? My 3 days trial is running out soon! ;D

Hey lennel, the PPTP server is currently in US. We're seeing what we can do to get u a UK address :D Thanks! I have extended your trial for free by another 4 days :D

Yeap we're working on tightening up. The common login is just a stop gap solution.

I too followed the instructions on this page http://www.bolehvpn.net/pptp.html (http://www.bolehvpn.net/pptp.html) but it does not work. Authentication just fails. Is there a solution for UK streaming as I'd like to use iPlayer too. Otherwise, I'll have to look for another solution.

Make sure you're connecting to pptp.bolehvpn.net
We don't have a UK PPTP server just yet, we're looking into getting one running soon.

The UK server has been ordered already and we are awaiting for delivery. Btw for iPad there may be some internal restriction within the iPad that reports which region it is from. In such a case it won't bypass it even with the correct IP. Just noted that some people still couldn't get it to work on some apps.

might be alright. I tried connecting to pptp.bolehvpn.net and got a US IP. It allowed me to view shows using the NBC app, so it could detect and allow the app to go through.
waiting for the UK server as well. Once that works out, will definitely order a longer term service :)

Well I don't use it on an ipdad, but I use the iplayer on my computer, so it shouldn't matter, it's just a different protocol is all on the ipad...

Reuben can we use the IPsec on the computer?
I used Shrew Soft in the past for a client in Linux, quite nice, can't remember if it was straight IPSec or with L2TP...

Hi Reuben, well I don't know if this is true but I was told in the past that since IPsec is a protocol it has better security...
But I've done some reading in the past, surfing online, I've yet to really find anything that shows this to be true, most places I've read seem to show OpenVPN to be as secure...

L2TP/IPSec and OpenVPN I would say are equally secure. L2TP/IPSec is just the most widely used type of corporate VPN out there and therefore has more 'history' and native support in devices. iVPN's summary pretty much sums it up. Also as the way we implement L2TP/IPSec is WITHOUT certificates for convenience sake (since we're talking about casual privacy here with your iPad/iPhone at wifi hotspots and such), it is less secure than our OpenVPN implementation.
We may work on improving this but I think most people who use their iPads aren't doing some extremely sensitive stuff on it. There are more concerns of that with Apple's iCloud services than any encryption :D but that's just my two cents:

Right now we're all focused on developing the Mac client which is proving to be complex due to Retina display support and OSX Mountain Lion's requirement to be registered as an Apple Developer.
