Hi Schade
Thank you for your reply and apologies for the delay in mine. Been up to the proverbials in busy. I've written a summary - not trying to teach 'grandmother to suck eggs' but if it helps anyone then that's a bonus. It's rough and ready but here goes.
sacd: Super Audio CD (muti-channel audio streams, surround sound)
5.1: left, centre, right, surround left, surround right speaker channels, plus subwoofer.
7.1: as 5.1 plus surround back right and surround back left.
Some Examples of Multi-channel Source Modes
Dolby True-HD: provides up to 7.1 full channel at 96kHz, 24bit resolution, with potentially no losses in the compression process. Data rates can be up to 18Mbps.
Dolby Digital 5.1: most commonly used sound format for DVD video. Sources deliver sound with five discrete full-range channels.
DTS 5.1: less common than Dolby Digital but probably has the edge. Five full range channels plus subwoofer.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx: decoder allows the processor to produce seven outputs from a two or multi-channel source.
DTS neo 6: provides up to six full-band channels of decoding from stereo material.
Strictly speaking, Pro Logic IIx and DTS neo 6 are two-channel source modes capable of producing multi-channel audio streams. 'dolby' trademark of Dolby Laboratories; 'dts' trademark of DTS, Inc.
A quick search at Amazon for 'sacd' throws up a fair range of classical and modern. I recently bought Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms and the difference between the multichannel and stereo versions has to be heard to be believed. Same for Bryan Ferry - Avalon, and Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto, and so on. The music is so much richer and definitely has that 'extra dimension' feel.
But the reason I mentioned the dreaded Demonoid is that some clever audiophiles have been upmixing albums from stereo sources and uploading them, search on 'dts' and you get albums like Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses; there's hundreds of 'em, way too many to give a real flavour of the range..
A private tracker offering these goodies would definitely be audio heaven. I'm not being lazy and will put in the searching/surfing time; I just thought that you guys might have pretty good tabs on what's out there. BolehVPN just seems very supportive all round.
I'm sure I read a reference to you being a movie gure Reuben. I'm obviously wrong but I can't now find the forum reference. If I should find it then I'll update.
Thanks for your time guys, best regards.
