What maximum speed can I expect from using a VPN?

If your download speed shows 325 and 106 that's in kilobits per second. There are 8 bits to a byte. Means 40-50 kB (kilobytes) per second is the max your line can get.

That's TM's fault or that you have been miscapped or that you are having severe problems or the other computer in your house is sucking up bandwidth.

have a 60 Mbit connection and getting 5+MB/s from it downloading from usenet.

this is 70% of possible speed with an open connection. (meaning not behind VPN) this is quite good.

as a matter of fact this is the fastest i've seen from any VPN service i've tried so far.

I am on 25Mbps cable broadband (from Starhub Singapore, with subscribed International speed at 12Mbps and Upload Speed at 1.2Mbps).
Did a Speedtest and I got close to 12Mbps download speed.

Problem is, my uTorrent running on BolehVPN (proxy mode) only gets 1-2Mbps... by downloading an uBuntu ISO file via uTorrent. When I bypass BolehVPN (remove all proxy settings on uTorrent), I get close to 10Mbps.

Is BolehVPN limiting download bandwidth?

Now you may be wondering, how come I don't get my maximum advertised speed even on the well seeded ubuntu torrent?

This faq assumes that you have

a) A perfect line or close to perfect one (good SNR and attenuation)
b) No routing issues with TM
c) No other background programs that use the internet running
d) No seeder/peer ratio issues
e) TCP optimization has been performed

Please check the speed troubleshooting guide if you wish to know how to tune your computer to close to achieving these conditions.

Most ISPs use the PPPoE protocol. This protocol has some overhead which results in around 10-15% loss in effective throughput. This PPPoE overhead is ALWAYS there regardless of VPN or not. Even your HTTP downloads are still subject to this.

Furthermore, the use of a proxy/VPN results in some overhead as well. We estimate this to be in the 10% region.

Now the figures given below are more or less theoretical and is still subject to loss on your ISP's line and I have not even factored in BT overhead or upload saturation.

1024 kbit Line (1 Mbit)

1024 kbit = 128 kB/sec

Take off PPPoE overhead (15%)

0.85 x 128 = 108.8 kB/sec

Now take off VPN/proxy overhead (around 10%)

0.9 x 108.8 = 97.9 kB/sec (Expected max speed roughly)

512 kbit Line

512 kbit = 64 kB/sec

Take off PPPoE overhead (15%)

0.85 x 64 = 54.4 kB/sec

Take off VPN/proxy overhead (10%)

0.9 x 54.4 = 49.0 kB/sec (Expected max speed roughly)

1536 kbit Line (1.5 Mbit)

1536 kbit = 192 kB/sec

Take off PPPoE overhead (15%)

0.85 x 192 kB/sec = 163.2 kB/sec

Now take off VPN/proxy overhead (around 10%)

0.9 x 163.2 = 146.9 kB/sec (Expected max speed roughly)

2048 kbit Line (2.0 Mbit)

2048 kbit = 256 kB/sec

Take off PPPoE overhead (15%)

0.85 x 256 kB/sec = 217.6 kB/sec

Now take off VPN/proxy overhead (around 10%)

0.9 x 163.2 = 195.8 kB/sec (Expected max speed roughly)

4096 kbit Line (4.0 Mbit)

4096 kbit = 512 kB/sec

Take off PPPoE overhead (15%)

0.85 x 512 kB/sec = 435.2 kB/sec

Now take off VPN/proxy overhead (around 10%)

0.9 x 435.2 = 391.7 kB/sec (Expected max speed roughly)

Hi, I from malaysia.. I'm using tm streamyx with 2mbps package.. does this help me increase the speed of my internet connection? the max speed at my apartment's tm port can support is about 3.8mbps.. as it not bypass the requirement for 4mbps package, then i have to take the 2mbps package only..

If you have a 2 mpbs package, then we can help you unthrottle your speed to the maximum of 2mbps. We cannot make your 2mbps connection turn into a 4mbps connection unfortunately
