uTorrent's DHT network
« on: September 26, 2012, 09:52:40 AM »
Hello everybody. I have a question regarding uTorrent's way of functionning through Boleh's proxied servers.
I have noticed on all downloading and seeding files that DHT is either disabled or "not allowed".
That mode increases connectivity between peers by not only relying on trackers, so i guess my
torrenting experience would be improved if i did not have that problem.
I would like to know if some other users using proxied servers don't have this problem and of course
how did they set uTorrent preferences in order to achieve this.

Here are my uTorrent preferences :
 "Enable DHT network" checked
"Enable local peer discovery" not checked
 "Enable peer exchange" checked
 "Enable UDP tracker support" checked
 "Proxy privacy" options all checked
"DHT nodes" on uTorrent's download interface => working (more than 300 nodes )
"Trackers" tab under downloading and seeding files :
=> DHT : either "disabled" or "Not allowed"
=> Local Peer Discovery :  disabled / Not allowed / Enabled on some few files
=> Peer exchange : either "Working" or "Not allowed"

Another question for Boleh's team : in order to avoid data leaking outside the proxy are DHT network,
"local peer discovery" and "peer exchange" safe ?

Thanks for reading.

Most private trackers disable DHT and PEX, so if your torrents are from IPT then you'll always see it disabled.

I believe that with the new uTorrent features using DHT and PEX should be alright, however if you don't want to risk a leak of any sort then I suggest disabling those if you use public torrents.

Thanks for your answer Chris.
In fact sor far i don't use IPT nor private trackers. I use public or semi public ones.
Regarding DHT and PEX; for example nowadays The ****** Bay only rely on those in order to
connect peers. So if i disable them i have a problem. Could a fellow user not having that
problem tell me how he settled uTorrent options ?

Having the latest uTorrent version and using exclusively proxied servers could someone tell
me if all connections go exclusively through the proxy ?
I know that "Transmission" torrent client has an option to force DHT connections to go
only through proxy when checked. So it is possible, i googled for uTorrent but did not come
on some significant answer.

Bye.

Transmission I'm not sure if it actually proxies the P2P traffic or just the tracker communication. You might want to check.

uTorrent does have this option on Windows but not sure on Mac.
