We recommend using a firewall to make sure your programs do not leak out over your normal connection in the event of a VPN disconnection.

We have a few guides on this here for Windows firewall and Comodo http://bolehvpn.net/blocking-non-vpn-traffic.php

You didn't mention your OS. For Linux distros you can use vpnmon. I've been using it for a while and it hasn't failed me yet. As the name suggests, it monitors your vpn connection and disables your network connection if it drops. Actually, that's why I'm here, to check the server statuses after a drop. I will add that's not a frequent occurrence.

A firewall is the way to go, but if you want to check out VPN software, check out VPNCheck Pro it's pretty nice.

What are the benefits of going the firewall route over using something like VPNCheck or vpnmon aside from cutting down on running processes? I realize just because vpnmon hasn't failed me yet doesn't mean it never will. I'm guessing the process is pretty much the same for Linux, just a matter of adding rules?

The professional way is always by firewall rules. These VPN apps are suited for users that aren't using a firewall, or understand how to do this, but thanks to BolehVPN as Chris mentioned, BolehVPN has a guide for helping you do this...

It's always better to go the firewall method rather then relying on other applications to help you,  but some of the VPN apps could have some other nice added features, I know VPNCheck does, but again these are things the end-user could do manually...

Thanks for all the info. Now if only I can find a decent how to for Kaspersky Pure 3.0. Trying to find how to set up anything through their site is a nightmare. So far I've found the basics so hopefully I'm close.

Kaspersky isn't that great, if you don't know check out this site; http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparatives-reviews/

Avira or Avast free editions are just fine, as good as any other AV application out there.

Check out the test results, I'd personally go with Avira at the moment Avast is starting to get a bit bloated and Avira has the best detection of any app out there Free or Paid and rated 2nd behind Gdata.

Thanks for that link. Some real interesting stuff there.Perhaps I'm reading this wrong but according to the real world Test performed by the company you sent me to shows Kapersky did better than all the others for the latest period which was Aug-Nov 2013

You have to look at all the tests to come up with an average not just one, and the last time I checked it Kaspersky overall was not number 1...

Call me paranoid, but at this present day and age, I don't trust using something out of Russia, especially for the fact that Mr. Kaspersky has ties to the KGB... :(

They all have their Pros & Cons, the free versions of Avast & Avira are as good as anything else out there, if not better...
