Here are some suggestions:

1. Make sure you have the latest ffdshow. Newer versions support multi-core processing.
2. Download and install CoreAVC. It's faster than ffdshow but lesser quality.

Honestly, I can't tell the quality difference between ffdshow and coreAVC. Or maybe I'm just not bothered. Anyhoo, they both work fine on my 2.8GHz C2D.

Edit: Doh, didn't read your update until after I posted this. Damn I need sleep. :P

use cccp+coreavc
make sure follow the step
Installation Instructions
http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page#Installation_Instructions

How to use CoreAVC instead of FFDShow
http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=CoreAVC

you need at least dual core 2.4 ghz+ to play everything smoothly with coreavc

i don't even need dual core for smooth HD playback. My old single core P4 with all the latest codecs installed, can play HD shows without any problems.

Are graphics cards a factor?

1080p with 11mB/s bitrate play fine?
earth 2007
Video     : 1920x1080 ~ 11024 kbit/s
Audio     : 448kbit/s 5.1 English

the bird scene in first 3 minutes of movie average bitrate is 24mB/s

You haven't tried 1080p x264s yet, which is what we're all talking about. Not them hdtv avi rips, not 720p x264s, not mpeg2 transport streams, all of which even my cousin's medieval A64 3000+ can handle with ease. 1080p? Maybe 10fps, tops, with coreAVC. Don't even bother with ffdshow.

@Erun, dunno about the latest cards, but to get hardware-accelerated x264 playback on my X1950pro, I'd need to install the Cyberlink codec. Not as efficient as CoreAVC though.

@freeman, the migrating birds scene is a real killer, but spectacular view. I made a sample of that scene to test computers if they can handle 1080p. :P

how do you know i haven't tried 1080p? I use coreavc to play 1080p HD and my playback is smooth but not your cousin. so don't compare me with your cousin.

1 minute; 141MB. You tell me where I can put it, I'll dump it there. :P

Or you can cut it yourself if you have the 1080p Planet Earth using MKVToolnix @ http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/.

@NWK: I've tried it on my E6300 and it slows down to a crawl. I've tried it on an A64 3500+, it crawls. I've tried it on a Core Duo, it crawls. That's how I know your system can't handle 1080p x264s. The reason I'm comparing your system with my cousin's is because they have the slowest machine I can get my hands on right now.

Don't believe me, show me where I can put that 141MB sample and you can try it out yourself. Or better yet, go and download Planet Earth. Worth the watch anyway; breathtaking views.

Unless of course, your 1080p is NOT x264, and even if it is, it's one of those cell-shaded animation kinda like Justice League: The New Frontier. That one doesn't use up much power. Maybe you can share your tweaking secrets, since you say you get smooth playback with 1080p on an old P4?
