Keep HK server as it is, and don't intruduce any new Aisa servers
2 (28.6%)
Drop HK server completedly (Asia server=0 )
0 (0%)
Run China mainland server and HK server side by side (unlikely?)

New China Mainland Server to replace HongKong Server?
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:12:09 PM »
A few month back I started suggesting to Boleh VPN to have HK Server for Asia's traffic, and Boleh did deliver. That for that. But it is said it is too expensive to maintain, and there has been debate about if Boleh should keep the HK server.

Here I am trying to finish what I have started.

I want to propose that Boleh uses a China Mainland server to replace the expensive HK server. How does that sound?

After some research and tests I found most legit Chinese Steaming service only accept IP address from the mainland, not HK.
e.g. the best steaming site www.qiyi.com and www.xunlei.com

On another note, I noted Boleh Proxy-All blocks P2P software like XunLei, also know as Thuder Networks

Proxy-All does not block p2p software, u just need to configure the proxy settings.

The Chinese servers are an option but the bandwidth is VERY low.

Let's put it this way. For the price of a 100 mbit or a cheap 1 gigabit server. I get 5 mbps in China :(
We were exploring having a separate package for this altogether but it would not be trivial to implement to our existing GUI/Portal system.

Anyway we are looking at some providers so fingers crossed. Bandwidth won't be very good though.

If people want a Chinese or Hong Server for surfing and streamning video online I say go for it, if any of this is for P2P, forget it.

P2P on Chinese servers is not a good idea...

Defo keep HK. What's the point in a Chinese server? People who work in China need the HK server for fast uncencosred internet.

Exactly. Internet censorship in the People's Republic of China is a nightmare really. People in China want to get out of it.

Yeah we just got confirmation that servers in China would suffer through the great firewall.
Relooking at HK again.

Glad to hear that. Hopefully we'll have one back soon.

How come? The previous one was pretty solid to be honest.

Generally they only provide 10 mbps shared (among 10-20 other servers) or dedicated 2-3 mbps. If we want dedicated 100 mbps...the cost goes up astronomically....

Shanghai has 10 mbps dedicated but will be censored. There's another option of Singapore with much better bandwidth but no 'China location'.

It really depends if it's to access Chinese specific content or not.

I don't care about the great firewall of China. Because I need to access China mainland only content e.g. Steaming and gaming services.  If I want to bypass the censorship I would use a US server to do so. Most China's censored content are the US based providers, like youtube and facebook. Why use a HK server when I can get it fast with a US server?

ShangHai's international bandwidth would probably be the best in China.
