Title: Downloading with D-Link DNS-323
Post by: kenlau on July 18, 2010, 11:30:25 PM
Futher to my post http://www.bolehvpn.net/forum/index.php/topic,5750.0.html (http://www.bolehvpn.net/forum/index.php/topic,5750.0.html), I am happy to report that I finally got one of my NAS to work with bolehvpn.

To cut a long story short, I could not get my Synology NAS to work with openvpn. The long and sorry story is posted http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=18881&start=15 (http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=18881&start=15). In the end, I think it is simply the fact that the tun driver included in the firmware was not compiled for this processor architecture or version. Since I am a Linux noob, I gave up and try my D-Link DNS-323, and I am happy to report I got it to work.

To any person who want to try this, the instructions can be obtained here http://forum.dsmg600.info/viewtopic.php?id=1495&p=1 (http://forum.dsmg600.info/viewtopic.php?id=1495&p=1). Its much more straightforward than messing around with Synology.

In the past, I gave up using DNS-323 because the default torrent client does not have any built-in encryption protocol, and I keep getting capped by Streamyx. However, encryption today is no longer an issue since using vpn, I gave this unit a new lease of life, with two new Western Digital 2TB  hard drives. Its also good news to anybody who want to use NAS units to download torrents since DNS-323 is a heck lot cheaper than Synology's units. Moreover, it draws only 21 - 23 watts of power at the very maximum, and around 19 watts at idle.

So I guess now I can subscribe to bolehvpn.
