Title: Western Digital WDTV Live Vs Seagate Freeagent Theatre+Player
Post by: junglemelon on July 20, 2010, 11:49:04 AM
Which is the better media player?
Can anyone give some technical comparisons between
the two? Both seem to be priced at RM 399.
Any other preferences or recommendations?
Where can one get these at Kota Kinabalu, Miri
or Kuala Lumpur.

WDTV Live for sure. You can get it off many sellers in Lowyat.net. I use one myself and have had no issues with it and regularly stream HD content from my homeserver to it.

The Seagate Freeagent Theater has problems playing HD content.

Compare it with:

Also this comparison:

In short, the FAT (FreeAgent Theatre) is butt ugly, and a far inferior product than the WDTV Live.

Anybody have an Apple TV? It has wireless N. The WD does not. My router is pretty far from my TV and this place is a rental, so no funny rewiring for me.

Apple TV does not really support a ton of formats. If I'm not mistaken, it only accepts formats that can go into Itunes? I don't think it can do 1080p either.

WDTV Live actually supports wireless if u plug a wireless usb adapter into its back.

I know you're an Apple fan and all but ... just doesn't make sense considering its higher price point and smaller feature set even with the N factored in.

Apple TV is an obsolete product that is getting 'refreshed' soon by Apple.  If you google reviews of Apple TV the consensus is pretty much to avoid it at all costs :)

Interesting! Not shilling for Apple though, don't get me wrong. I'm highly critical of the 4 and Antennagate, was just looking at the featureset of the Apple TV and was impressed. N and 160 GB HDD built in. Am currently playing my stuff using my 360, but a bit sien having to move files back and forth between PC and 360 using a USB drive.

PS3 + awesome streaming software (PS3 Media Server) is my setup :) Haven't bothered with anything else since switching from the hell that was TVersity to PS3MS.

If you're not streaming HD to your TV, Reuben's suggestion of getting a USB wireless N dongle will probably work pretty well?

WDTV Live rules absolutely; plays just about whatever shit you chuck at it!  ;D

Just be aware that if you're still unfortunate enough to have an older CRT TV that only supports up to 480i, and plan on using the component connections, it won't work.

Latest firmware updates are here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_live

Yeah i don't think wdTV supports rmvb. The WD Tv Mini does (strange eh?) ^_^

Main advantage of LIVE is the LAN cable and DTS audio support.

Post by: Schadenfreude on August 17, 2010, 11:38:56 AM
erm, what on earth is still worth grabbing that's on rmvb? please don't say porn.

Btw, I feel I need to point out that the wdtv live absolutely fucking fails when it comes to playing back several mp4 files I have that were encoded at 30fps; audio playback becomes totally unsynced to the video. Has anyone else experienced this?

MP4 has issues randomly across the board - I've downloaded some that transcode/play/stream well and others with the exact same encoding parameters which completely fail (sync, blank screen, crashed server, etc.).  I'm not sure what causes it, but will someday test out different decoders/encoders and see if can be narrowed down to something useful.

em... dun support mkv ...

It supports MKV fine. MKV introduced a new compressed header format which required a firmware update from WD to fix though.

Or just download MKVToolnix 4.4.0 (this version turns off header compression by default) and remux the offending mkv file. The process takes only a minute or so for a 4.4GB mkv file. Easy-peasy.

It's in the specs:

Use PC if u know how to operate window software... it will play all the video formats. Those media players are not really worth to invest.  they might hang/reboot if encounter unknown format. The media player maker seldom fix it unless there are lots of users demand it to be fixed. Some brands of
media player has limitations of hi quality movie playback and overheat issues. I spent tons of $$$ messing with media players(WDTV, Tvix, HDX, DuneHD) and I felt regret.  :'(

Too bad for you, but I've never encountered any problems with my wdtv live except for some mkv files that were encoded with header compression (easily countered with a simple remux, or firmware update). 1080p files are always smooth as silk during playback as well. To each his own, I guess.

The firmware update for the WDTV was painless.

you can laugh @ me if u like... :P I m using DuneHD Base 3.0 now and it has less issues with all the movies (bluray ISO) I grabbed from internet.
BTW, wdtv product is not good for those movies which has hi bit-rates.

If you say so, then it must be true. I guess I'm just prone to hallucinations and self-delusions. Whatever. WD doesn't pay me anything to defend their products so I'll just let people take your word for it.

I'm seriously considering buying a media player and I'm now very confuse on the players around. I've search all round the web and found people talking about WD & Seagate Freeagent but not Kworld M200 which "should" play everything under the sun and is very cheap. So any ideas on Kworld? I've also check out A.C Ryan and it seems to be better than WD in terms of compatibility and the price is almost the same.

I need to know where can I find review for Kworld M200 since viewnet is selling for only RM239 and u can even swipe card... har har..? Thanks a zillion!!!!

For pure MKV viewing, pick WDTV la... v.affordable and good aftersales service(firmware updates).

Post by: dragonball on December 08, 2010, 11:01:47 PM
hm. But WD live can't watch RMVB rite and it's price at RM329 wheres Kworld M200 can watch RMVB & MKV at RM239.

I know that WD is more popular due to it's namesake but is there any other difference? bcuz the latter is "suppose" to be able to play almost any format.

Sorry need to buy at least 4 units so can't make a mistake here.

Thanks for your time...

what types of videos do u download the most? MKV? RMVB? ISO?. This could help determine which type of media player to buy.
The most important thing is after-sale support. U can dump the media player to trash can once they stop writing the new firmware.

Sian... the speed cap has RETURNED!!!

Chinese series - RMVB but blockbuster normally MKV & M2Ts.

*I'm a bit lucky, I'm not affected by cap. even during daytime.

So anyone heard of Kworld? it's cheap, anything to look for other than all the video support? seems more like a marketing "gimmick".

tq

this player should do well in 720p video content.  :) if u want to pursuit high quality video content(such as: 1080p, DTS MA/THD 7.1, gigabit network streaming and etc)... this player might not suitable for u.

hm... I've done some study and it seems that it doesn't really matter what brand but what chipset they use...

Differences of Chipset:

1. F10 Chipset
Advantage: support all kind of formats, cost cheaper
Disadvantage: theoretically unable cope file size more than 15GB, average output quality
Recommend: Basic Multimedia Playback

2. AMLogic Chipset
Advantage: support all kind of formats (except full HD VC-1), cost cheaper, low power consumption, good output quality
Disadvantage: theoretically unable cope file size more than 20GB, cant support VC-1
Recommend: Satisfiable Multimedia Playback

3. Realtek Chipset
Advantage: support all kind of formats, able to cope file size more than 20GB, good output quality
Disadvantage: output sound quality lower than Sigma Chipset, device will slightly hot than F10 and AMLogic Chipsets
Recommend: Excellent Multimedia Playback

4. Sigma Chipset
Advantage: support all kind of formats (except Real Media), able to cope file size more than 20GB, excellent output quality
Disadvantage: cost higher, can't support Real Media
Recommend: Extreme Multimedia Playback for Multimedia Enthusiast

thanks for the reply... ciao.....

Remember firmware updates are still 'brand' dependent

true. Hence getting AC Ryan or WD would be a bit more appropriate and still Kworld does seems to regularly update it's ROM... *sigh*...  too many to choose...

I went and made an impulse buy today. Managed to wrangle a price of A$93 for a WD TV Live. Heh.

Liking it so far. Will be watching Inception on it tonight with the missus. :)
