setting up a wireless network at the office..
« on: February 22, 2009, 07:55:58 AM »
hye guys..as per the topic, how can it be done? a small office, subscribing to lets say, streamyx 2MB package, wants to set up a wireless network so that anyone in the office can surf with their WiFi laptop..please recommend me :

1 - the set up with the least hardware needed, i.e. only 1 wireless modem.

2 - the set up with no 'server' computer needed, i.e. turn on modem and thats it..wireless already on.

3 - the set up if i need to put a password for anyone wanting to access the WiFi network.

thanks..

I need more info, such as how many laptop are connecting to internet?
Do you need printer and file sharing?
What Operating System are you using?
But basically,you will need:-

- wireless router - im using a D-link 615 (very nice access control)
- adsl modem
- wireless router connected to adsl modem
- set up connection to internet (user id, password, DNS server)
- set up security (wireless access key) , use WPA-2 if thats an option

You dont need a server computer. You need just a one time network cable'd connection to router for setup

And preferably, hide your SSID after configuration.

A Wireless router with modem is all you need.

Make sure your username is username@streamyx as most people put username@streamyx.com which won't work.

You need to connect it to a computer. Read the manual, it will tell you the url to use to log onto the management screen. Its not always the same, sometimes different modems got different ip, so we cant help you there. Once it's set up, you wont need to do it again. Unless got problem la.
