I want but i got no cash on me now. :'( :'( :'(
-
Here's what I found out after using this for a few hours.
1. It can play mkv 720p and 1080p easily without any hiccups from 2.5" IDE and SATA USB. Both normal hdd and FreeAgent tune USB. No external power required to power-up 2.5" USB drives.
2. MKV with DTS, you wont get any sound but this can be is easily converted using popcorn hour dts converter. Took about 3 minutes to convert full length mkv movie dts to mkv aac or dolby audio (using q9550 overdose 3.6ghz).
3. Menu is cool with features to sort by date, favorites, recent and by folders for all formats, movie, pictures, mp3.
4. It has two USB ports, where you can plug a permanent USB cable for usb hdd and another one for u to plug a thumb drives to view picture or play smaller files.
5. It supports ntfs hdd format, well you need this if you want to transfer and play 8GB mkv files.
6. Very small and neat, can put on top of your tv or besides your astro decoder.
7. What else worth mentioning, remote control very small, looks like a nokia phone cause I thought my son was playing with it, but he was playing with the phone.
8. HDMI and RCA jacks to cater to all kind of tv
9. Bad things, no network connectivity and if you lose the remote, you in deep shit cause there's no manual button to do whatever else.
10. Support multi-audio channel and subtitles idx/sub/srt
11. DOES NOT support subtitles in mkv container.
All in all, small price to pay if you looking for a standalone mkv/avi player. Better than getting HTPC or DVD DIVX players.
Reuben just got his unit, maybe he can write longer review after he plays with his hundreds mkv files.
-
I'm interested. Put me down for one unit please.
If it's okay with you guys, I'll send the money when you're ready to place the order.
-
Yeah please hold the price will be revised downwards :D
Distributor dropped their prices!
So good news to you all. Should be less than RM390 now.
-
Let me sell a kidney first. :P
-
So good news to you all. Should be less than RM390 now.
messy puddle of drool appears...
-
wah RM390, this is so tempting....
-
:o very very interested
-
RM 390 is a pretty sweet price for this thing. Seems like a good way to get hd content on your hdtv if you don't have a ps3 or hd dvd player.
-
Hi Reuben, pls do include me....i am very interested in this product mate.... ;D. do let me know when u r going to place the order... ;)
-
Having some issues here as WD is now closed for 2 weeks and the 'official distributors' are charging a crazy price
-
seriously??? how much are they charging now? if WD is closed....arent the price suppose to drop like crazy heheheh? ???
i was really hoping to get this product....was surfing all day looking product review...and it was damm good.
just a query, does this product available in Low Yat? if yes, any idea how much would it cost?
-
Uh where did u learn ur economics :P
WD close means no supply, hence existing units become more exp?
-
hahaha...do excuse me my economics is very bad...hehehe ;D
but as for now....wats the current price they are offering to you?
-
Latest Update on the pricing. To clear up the confusion on the pricing please read:
1. The prices quoted by all the sellers in LYN is no longer valid. The prices for RM399 is ONLY DURING KLCC PC FAIR recently. This was due to 1000 units brought in by the distributor.
2. During PC Fair, 800 units were sold and a week after that some of the resellers who still got stock are still selling at the PC Fair price.
3. Now there is no more stock for that RM399 or RM388.
4. Only ONE AUTHORISED DISTRIBUTOR carrying this in Malaysia and price retail is RM499.00
If anyone still interested, please send the payment now at RM469.00 to reuben accounts. There is now no more MOQ since we are not getting any special price. Our cost price is RM429 and delivery is probably RM10-20, so we are not making any profit here except to pay for running around cost.
This is a community service only.
RM469 is inclusive of delivery charges or COD and price is valid while it lasts. We will update if there is any changes.
On another note, the WD TV has released a new firmware update which also support the embedded mkv subtitles as well as sub, srt, ssa and various other subtitle format.

-
aiseh.
now RM469 seems a bit steep for a HD encoder.
ill keep an eye out for this when the price drops.
-
encoder? :/
it doesn't encode.
If you view the other items of a similar spec they are many times more exp.
-
ok, typo from me.
i meant player.
i have a blu-ray player at home with a HD tv, but Bluray Disc are going for RM120-170 right now.
so i guess this IS many times better.
how did you find the picture and most importantly, the sound coming from this?
-
ok, i got some answer for my own question after some googling around
sound is encoding in 2 channels by default, and will only go to DTS or Dolby if we switch it to Stereo > Digital in the settings menu and we used a HDMI connection.
I've read that the DTS sound is great.
-
Price REVISED: RM389.00
-
Put me down for 1 unit at the revised price of RM$ 389 ............. by COD
-
i got this one week ago and im impressed by the capabilities. Especially the firmware upgrade part, makes it easier to stay up to date for future codec changes.
The menu is sleek and the PQ and Sound is awesome.
-
Okie confirmed available.
We will be able to ship on 22nd or slightly earlier.
-
Will it be able to play rmvb format ??
-
It does not play rmvb. Since when rmvb is known in HD? 720P or 1080P? Go for mkv if you want real clear picture.
-
Paid, awaiting delivery. ;D
-
maybe there is a slight delay in getting this. Not long but one day only due to the accounts manager on emergency leave. she has to attend to a relative funeral.
Will pickup the barang on tuesday instead of today.
-

-
It was quick, got mine within a day of payment. Great job Reuben ;D Tested the unit and everything looks good. The codec handles HD (mkv) files, video quality is simply brilliant. However some of the files I've tried don't have audio when played back !! I know it is a known set back but has anyone some idea how to get round the problem. (Plse dont ask me to re-convert the file, just dont have the time. ::)
Thanks !! I can have HD movie during CNY ;D
-
Till when I can take order? I got a cuz from australiq who wants it but no confirmed yet.
-
I'll check with our supplier after the CNY period.
stsr280265: did u send us ur details?
-
The issue in audio in mostly due to Sigma maker not wanting to pay DTS for royalty, so that any audio except DTS are playable.
Workaround will require conversion but probably take a few minutes to do it. Download this small but very good audio converter,
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Convertors/PopCorn-MKV-AudioConverter.shtml
You can convert a whole batch of directory to make life simpler.
As for new orders, please update me fast and confirmation.
-
Hi, I am interested to get 1 unit. Is it still available? Thanks.
-
Would be available after cny :D
-
Is still available for order? Price is still RM390?
Happy New Year ;D
-
is this still available?
-
Western Digital's offices only opens on Monday so we will advise on the next batch here but it shouldn't be a problem getting more.
Please register your GENUINE interest here so we know how many units to order :D

for full details on how to order.

Payment made. Hope to get my unit b4 CNY Holiday ;D
Managed to spend some time experimenting with the unit during the CNY hols and I thought I share some of my experiences:=
A very handy and highly protable HD media player which I find most useful when you have a few TV sets scattered around the house.!! I have even done some demo with the unit at my friends house and it has not fail to impress. I am using a Buffalo 320Gb ext drive with lots of good HD stuff and music. As previously mentioned it played almost every media format except digital audio in mkv files. The handling of jpeg files I find is even better than by the TVIX unit which I also own. Performance of the WDTV is noticeably better after the FW upgrade, which is a simple affair. PitBoss pointed out a way to convert DTS encoded files by using the AudioConverter which works well but it took 3-4 hours to convert a 11Gb file. Benefit of this process is, we end up with a file encoded with both audio tracks (if we chose to keep the original DTS track). See Pit Boss post below.

The long and short of it is the Buy is a good investment and I have no regrets.
Cheers :)
-
Thanks man btw are DTS encoded files very common?
-
Most newer bluray converts are using DTS. I wonder why it took me only 10 minutes to convert standard 1080P DTS to DD5.1? Maybe I'm running QC 9550.
-
Pit Boss is right; DTS conversion to DD5.1 or AC-3 can be done in a jiffy... i dunno what software the other guy was using or if his configs were wrong.
-
I am using a Intel C2D 2.2ghz pc but should not be making such a big difference, I guess. The file that I was converting amounts to 11.5 Gb . What settings did you use for the conversion ?
-
To all,
To solve the problem of having no sound on some MKV's, i suggest you update the firmware to 1.01, quick and easy process. Just follow the instruction posted:-
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/
File not outputting DTS signal?
This solution is for those who have amps. Get a optical cable, connect it from the WDTV to the amp, switch the audio signal from stereo to digital in SETTINGS, and you will get Dolby, 5.1, DTS or plain PCM signals outputted through your amps.
i am currently loving my WDTV. Just ogling on HD stuffs over and over again.
Rewatching favourites such as Matrix, LoTR is such an experience.
Reubs should get a package going :- BolehVPN + WDTV = HD goodness!
-
I should also bundle it with those high speed 16-32 GB Team pen drives that we also sell :D
-
WoW ! This is fantastic ! Reuben, can you test few MKV files with subs, I have a huge collection of Anime & most are in MKV files, & subtitles is "important". Please do feedback if they work fine. I am considering to get one !
-
They do work fine. Tested already
-
Question. Does unicode and non-english locale subtitles display correctly?
-
Question. Does unicode and non-english locale subtitles display correctly?
According to the v1.01.01 Release Note, yes it should. I just got my unit and haven't got chance to test it out yet. But looking at the Release Note, an upgrade is a must! ;)
Version 1.01.02:
Resolved Issues:
• Resolved the issue surrounding updating the firmware from a large (500GB or larger) drive, previously the WDTV™ would not recognize the updated firmware on a large drive
Known Issues:
• When image is rotated 90 degrees there is some elongation in the rotated view
• If the user unsafely removes an HFS+ formatted drive from the media player without using the Eject button, the drive will become read only media
Version 1.01.01:
New Features:
• Added .MKV chapter selection for video playback for MKV with chapter support
• Added .MTS file extension support
• Added .TP file extension support
• Added .TS file extension support
• Added 1080p 24hz support
• Added disk volume name to folder navigation in list mode
• Added EXIF orientation flag functionality for auto picture rotate
• Added file size in filename
• Added jump feature to the remote: While fast forwarding or reversing, if the “Next” or “Prev” buttons are pressed, video will jump 10 minutes in the respective direction
• Added progress indicator for the duration of the FF or REV function
• Added a blinking status LED behavior while drive is mounting; previously the light just stayed on
• Added sequential .M2TS file playback function
• Added additional subtitle support (SMI, SUB, ASS, SSA)
• Added user selectable font size for subtitle support
• Added song title scroll in music playback to prevent truncation
• Added embedded subtitle display in .MKV files
• Added additional subtitle encoding support for the following: Western Europe (ISO), Traditional Chinese (Big5), Simplified Chinese (GB18030), Japanese (Shift-JIS), Korean (EUC-KR), Cyrillic (Windows-1251), Cyrillic (KOI8-R), Greek (ISO); previously only UTF-8 was supported
• Added display sizing menu for photo playback: Fit to Screen, Full Screen, Keep as Original
• Added accelerating scroll speed based on how long the arrow is held down on the remote when navigating folders with a large number of files; previously only one, constant speed was available
Resolved Issues:
• Resolved issue when 2 drives were connected, then one drive was disconnected, the files from the disconnected drive still showed up on the file list but were not playable
• Resolved "repeat one" failure during music playback; previously songs would not repeat
• Resolved artist name truncation issue during music playback
• Resolved issue where WD TV would not turn back on with remote after extended period of inactivity; previously WD TV had to be unplugged and was unrecoverable with the remote
• Resolved image size and position issues during video playback; previously the image displayed did not fill the screen until the picture was zoomed in and then out again

All our units are now sold out but we are restocking next week. Please place your order with us as soon as you can if you wish to be part of the second batch.

Hi Reuben,
I have completed my payment. Transfered to your maybank account earlier and also sent an email to sales@bolehvpn.net and I have also contacted Pit Boss. ;D can't wait to have my hands on the product.
Another thing, any suggestion where i can get HDMI cables? and how much do they cost ?
Thanks yah....
-
ill answer on behalf of Reubs. :D
You can HDMI and optical Toslink cables in Jalan Pasar (very cheap) if you're in KL. Otherwise, u can get it in any TV and radio shops (electronic shops) like Harvey Norman.
-
Thanks mate....any idea on the price range itself? might be going to KL this saturday....will drop by harvey norman.
-
have u received the item?
-
Thanks mate....any idea on the price range itself? might be going to KL this saturday....will drop by harvey norman.
Dont get from Harvey if you looking for HDMI. Their price is an overkill, just go to Lowyat and look in Sri or All IT. I think HDMI I saw was around RM45.
-
oh, i think it retails for RM100+ in harvey norman. Goes for about RM20 in Jalan Pasar. Damn, i love that place.
optical cable is Rm16.
-
RM20? that's a bit scary
-
well, they do sell in price ranges
RM20 (cheapest), RM30+ RM50 and the higher ends selling for RM100+
im using the one that cost RM25, nothing wrong til now, no explosions of any kind yet.
