I gather from reading many posts in this forum that quite a few people are technologically savvy. I have googled anonymous email providers have found a few that are truly anonymous (anonymousspeech.com, countermail.com, using thunderbird+??, PGP, hushmail, http://www.novo-ordo.com/, (http://www.novo-ordo.com/,) ) to name a few. Let it not be said I don't use google first 8) But since there are so many tech savvy people on this friendly and welcoming board, I was wondering If I could get some opinions for a non-technical person on finding encypted email providers. I understand that for an email to be truly encypted both parties must be using the same service or the receiving party must have the encryption key. Since I am paranoid, I want to be able to send someone an email and they can't trace it back to me. Maybe a server but the server refuses to give up any info. Not doing ANYTHING illegal, immoral, or hurtful towards another human being just like the idea of being anonymous. Peace :)

Tech savvy people on this friendly and welcoming board
Lol tech savvy yes but I don't know if I would describe the people as "friendly and welcoming" :D More like grumpy but generally well meaning. Or am I just talking about Schadenfreude hahah.
But anonymous and encrypted aren't necessarily the same thing so you gotta get this concept down :D
Encryption means I can't read what you're sending. Anonymity means I don't know who it's from.
I understand the general wish of being anonymous, but it is a bit puzzling if you don't want to be identifiable especially to the recipient of the e-mail.
I do like hushmail.com though so it's worth taking a look at that.
However:
“[Hushmail] is useful for avoiding general Carnivore-type government surveillance, and protecting your data from hackers, but definitely not suitable for protecting your data if you are engaging in illegal activity that could result in a Canadian court order.”
There's also countermail that seems to know what they're talking about though I cannot attest to them since I haven't used them before.
There's also the free Anonemail http://anonymouse.org/anonemail.html (http://anonymouse.org/anonemail.html) which will randomly delay your e-mail to further protect your privacy.
Though really, seems like a lot of work. If people want to take the effort to trace my love e-mails back to me, I'm totally ok with that. Just for laughs, here's a comic in the attachment :D

Hushmail cannot be trusted
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2007/11/encrypted-e-mai/ (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2007/11/encrypted-e-mai/)
Also hushmail is canadian After Bill C-30 becomes law you should be very afraid.
Countermail looks good
anonymousspeech.com very spooky

Also using Thunderbird with Enigmail( uses openpgp) is better than anything you have to pay for.....I think ???

As I said encryption and anonymity is different. Enigmail does not provide anonymity as far as I know.

You are absolutely right reuben. The more I think about anonymity vs encryption...It's actually anonymity I crave. Easiest way around this is a web based email service, one based off shore, and use it with your service... BAM anonymity 8)

Countermail is by far the best, I use them. They have excellent support as well. It requires Java, but that is needed for webmail Man-in-the-middle protection. They delete payment information once it has been processed.
They're the only provider which encrypt all unencrypted e-mails that you receive.

Hushmail keeps records, not good... :(
