Any Steps Taken For Anonymity Protection?
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:24:42 PM »
Hi Guys,

I wanted to know has BolehVPN taken any steps for protecting anonymity when using the VPN service?

VPN is not an anonymity network, if there aren't any anonymity techniques employed then it is just a VPN connection and only provides pseudonymity.

I looked over the website and I didn't see any mention about any anonymity measures or techniques and I know that Boleh's main focus is towards P2P and without any type of anonymity protection in place, especially for something like P2P usage, then people aren't going to be really safe.

Are there any anonymity measures or techniques in place?

THANKS

BolehRoute is a full routed VPN encrypted combination combined with OpenVPN which prevents any leaks.

If you combine this with VPNCheck you get as secure a connection as you can.

Multihop networks and the such are not practical for P2P due to the massively increased latency which would have a severe impact on speed which defeats one of the main advantages a VPN offers in traffic shaped ISPs. Providers that do offer multihop networks do not support P2P and frankly it's overkill for just mere P2P protection. The same goes with multiplexing

As I said before, we're a niche provider and there are more specialized options out there for EXTREME privacy and however you define 'anonymity' but I doubt any of them would support P2P and for our intended use we believe our setup is 'anonymous enough' or pseudonymous or however you wish to classify it.

To truly identify the user if they're listening at the destination point, first they have to get us the VPN provider to reveal our logs which we don't keep unless they take over our VPN servers and monitor it from there. In real life, most often than not, it's much easier to issue a takedown notice for infringement issues than it is to deal with the legalities of taking control of ALL our servers (since a VPN user can switch from VPN server to another). Then after jumping through all sorts of legal hoops to actually sit and monitor our servers, they have to wait until what they're looking for pops up again and then contact the ISP to reveal the identity assuming the ISP will do so. While this is happening, there's nothing preventing us from removing those servers from our configurations and getting alternative providers. I doubt they can do all of this without us knowing.

I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just a huge load of work. For day to day privacy for surfing, P2P, etc, we feel our system is good enough. If you're trying to mastermind a terrorist attack and have the huge power of the NSA bearing down on you (who has the time and resources), then yeah maybe our system may not be sufficient.

Frankly if extreme privacy is your concern (which I think it is considering the posts), we're not the right people as I've said in other posts and this one. We're a VPN provider where we match privacy and performance and it's impossible to get both without a huge hefty cost. Even so called Xerobank setups all you have are third party people or Xerobank's FAQ to rely on and heck if we switched to Xerobank's model we'll probably lose more than half of our customers as they are a different breed of VPN. As far as I understand Xerobank's support is close to nil.

Do you happen to be DasFox? T_T I'll repeat this one last time. If you're looking for extremely secure VPN, then look elsewhere to Xerobank or Cryptohippie, etc. and deal with their limitations and take them for their word. If you're after a mixture of performance and privacy with customer support then look for us. Frankly, there are a lot more insecure VPNs out there than us (Relakks?).

This will be my final post on the matter.

Hi Reuben, thanks for the reply.

Sorry I forgot to mention it, but this wasn't just a post for my concerns, but to let your users know where you stand on this issue, since I didn't see anything on the website.

I understand what you are saying about trying to make a balance here, I just thought it would be good to let people know how safe they should feel using your services is all...

CHEERS

P.S. I was going to send you a PM, but I can't send you a PM... :(

Bizi, why don't you launch yourself off the side of a cliff and lecture the nesting seagulls instead? I'm so fucking bored of your posts where all you do is whine about how Bolehvpn's standards are not up to par. I can only presume your extreme concerns for privacy and anonymity is because you are somehow involved in child porn and terrorism? Oh, but I jest. Maybe.

CHEERIO!
