My info:
Mac 10.8.6 user using Utorrent 1.8.6
Connecting to Proxied-Netherlands with settings via bolehvpn.com utorrent tutorial:
Socks5, 10.10.10.1, port: 1080
Encryption: enabled
Enable DHT
Enable PEX
Use proxy for hostname lookups
Use proxy for peer to peer connections
automaticaly map port (Using NAT-PMP or UPnP)
Used ip check tool to see if utorrent was using proxy, came back with Netherlands IP, therefore proxy successful in utorrent.
Results:
Torrents that normally are very fast w/o a vpn have great difficulty connecting resulting in:
DHT:waiting for announce...
Proxy connect error-connection closed by peer
Connection timed out.
Strangely, the ubuntu torrent went fast as well as torrents with TONS of peers(20,000+), torrents with less peers (examples: 100-1000) never seem to connect.

Also, it appears that my utorrent is using the same IP address as appeard in my Bolehvpn gui listed under server ip address.
Also, all the torrents, some with excellent seed/peer ratios are showing: Seeds 0(0) Peers 0(1).
Tried about 20 different torrents tonight, only 1 connected and had decent speeds (50kb/s+). Many had excellent seed/peer ratios for downloading.
-
bump
-
Does this occur on the other Proxied servers?
-
Sorry I got locked out because i forgot my password and had to contact support for that.
So i did some research on the various servers, here is what i found:
*All torrents i connected to were torrents with a very high number of seeders(1000's)/leechers and good ratios between them for downloading*
Proxied Switzerland Day 1: (At Friends House)
Seeds: was able to connect to 8 out of 7000
Peers: was able to connect to 1 out of 2000
Speed: 2MB/s
Connectability: 2 of 5 torrents connected, 3 did not
Proxied Netherlands:
Unable to connect to vpn server
xcloakproxy-tcp-canda:
Unable to connect to vpn server
xcloakrouted-tcp-france:
Connected to VPN quickly, but nothing worked including browsing or torrents
xcloakrouted-tcp-germany:
No torrents would connect.
surfsingstreaming-tcp-italy:
No torrents would connect.
fully routed tcp china:
No torrents would connect.
fully routed tcp germany:
Very poor connection to torrents maybe Seeds: 1(5000) connected
Speeds: - .1-.3kbps
Proxied Switzerland Day 2: (At Friends House)
Seeds: Connected to 4-8 out of 2700
peers: Connected to 1-3 out of 3000
Speed: 1mbps
Comment: Strange, initially utorrent showed red no connectivity light but was connecting to torrents and downloading at good speeds. Overtime light turned green.
Proxied All:
No torrents connected
fully routed tcp hong kong:
No torrents connected
Interestingly, i am getting much better connectivity at my friends house than mine.
It has nothing to do with my isp, because when i disable the vpn torrents go fast.
Utorrent seems to connect ok and speeds are fast enough as long as i'm on Switzerland and using torrents that have a TON of seeders with good ratios. Yet most of the torrents I download have very few seeders (5-20), utorrent never seems to connect to these torrents. It is rare that the speed will STAY high on a torrent with a good connection, often it will bounce around all over the place-usually on the very low side. It seems as though my connection is being reject by peers, again just my opinion.
I have attached an image of my utorrent settings:
-
So i decided to test utorrent with the Fully routed servers and disable proxy in utorrent. Using an ipcheck site, the torrent reads my ip as the fully routed ip address, so is there any benefit to the increased security of using the proxy server with utorrent? Im getting really nice speeds through the fully routed option with no proxy utilization.
how much anonymity/security am I sacrificing?
-
In terms of security, both are using the same encryption. FullyRouted forces ALL your data through the VPN, this includes browser, games, messenger data and so on. If you're worried about the chance of your normal IP leaking in the event of your connection being lost, I recommend enabling Lockdown in the Settings tab of the BolehVPN client (If you use the FullyRouted servers).
Lockdown basically disables the default route on your computer and so forces all traffic, even LAN traffic, over the VPN.
-
I don't see the point of using the proxy then, also i do not have the "lockdown" feature in my mac client 1.2.2 which appears to be the latest version.
-
With the proxy properly configured, your programs will be forced to use the VPN. In the event that the VPN connection is lost, they won't leak your normal IP as they're set to only connect through the VPN.
There's also the benefit of only sending a few programs through the VPN, so you can stream or game while torrenting.
