Title: Please recommend gigabit wired / wireless N router
Post by: nazrix on September 01, 2010, 11:48:05 PM
Am moving to new house, will add CAT6 wiring around house and want to get good gigabit (1000/100/10) and wireless N router. Please recommend a good one, it will be on 24/7/365 and usage will include torrenting.

Would it be better to get separate routers for wired and wireless?

asus rt-n16 (http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=WAa6AQFncrceRBEo&templete=2) (ram=128mb, flash=32mb) = rm 399
linksys wrt320n (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/APAC/en/products/WRT320N) (ram=32mb, flash=8mb) = rm 375
buffalo wzr-hp-g300nh (http://www.buffalo-asia.com/cgi-bin/products/detail.cgi?country=my&code=4&id=292) (ram=64mb, flash=32mb) = rm 259
tp-link tl-wr1043nd (http://www.tp-link.com/products/productDetails.asp?class=wlan&pmodel=TL-WR1043ND) (ram=32, flash=8mb) = rm 189

all can run dd-wrt (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index)

if you want just plain router usage, go for tp-link
but if you want more features, go for buffalo or asus
both support usb drive and can run as file sharing center (never tested though) = http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/USB_storage

unless you guys are doing some serious work like a centralized massive file server for video / network intensive activity, else i don't see how would 5 computers benefit from a gigabit network :D

Well, there are benefits, mostly when backing up which sometimes involves big files (emails especially). I also have a NAS and plan to get another as backup (RAID5 is fine for redundancy but better safe than sorry). Nightly backups would take a lot less time with CAT6+gigabit switch. Gigabit routers are cheap enough nowadays. Of course, it all depends on your usage :)
