TM Undersea Cable Update

TM LadyHere are some updates from TM:

Dear Valued Customers,

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is pleased to inform its customers that the restoration works on the Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) near Chongming, China connecting Malaysia to the United States has been completed.

Meanwhile, there is a delay in the restoration date for the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 3 (SMW3) cable network between Tuas, Singapore and Penang linking Malaysia due to technical problems at the repairing stages. Due to the delay, full recovery of SMW3 cable network is now expected to be on 17 April 2009.

However, to date, TM has already recovered 97% bandwidth capacity for its Internet traffic to Hong Kong and North America.

TM Internet and IP services as well as other critical business applications linked to the US and Hong Kong has resumed normal operations since 10 April 2009.

We would like to thank our customers for their patience during the affected period. Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail us at help@tm.com.my for any Internet related problems.

Which basically means:

  1. Connections to US should be not too bad
  2. Europe still sucks till 17 April 2009
  3. Which ACTUALLY REALLY MEANS: Streamyx still sucks 😛

I’ve been to China, Thailand, and Philippines and used their “1mb connection” that actually does download 50-100kb/s and can access international sites without much of a slowdown. wtf is tmnet’s excuse for such slow international site connections?? (i ran it just now to 0.04mb/s download, 0.11mb/s upload 664 ping to USA) that is on a 4mb/s 180rm/month connection. if that is 97% of their bandwidth….then i’m moving back to thailand. if any business person asks me if malaysia is a good place to do business….i’d be ethically inclined to say no as a result of the govt’s actions to export malaysia’s best technology to surrounding countries and screw its own people from having any form of modern equipment. How the hell can the philippines have 10mb connections that run fast with their extremely poor economy?? and malaysia’s best is a 4mb connection that runs slower than dial-up did for me back in the USA 15 years ago! if i were malaysian, i’d be ashamed of this internet service and instead of boycotting american products….boycott streamyx and go with the wireless broadbands (although those still suck….i tried maxis and it wouldn’t operate in the evening rush hours). the people of malaysia must force tmnet to change, or you will just be taken for suckers like you have been for years.

Scott, you are damn right. We Malaysians have been very complacent about this kind of crap. If in the US, TMNet would have been sued with a class action lawsuit long time ago. Unfortunately for us, the way the damn system works around here… I don’t see any changes happening anytime soon. Boycott TMNet and what other options do we have? NOTHING! As you said, the other wireless providers are just as bad, if not worse.

  7. Andrew says:

Scott, perhaps you can assist by lodging a complaint with THE MALAYSIAN COMMUNICATIONS AND MULTIMEDIA COMMISSION…who supposed to regulate this sort of services.

    The website is at http://www.skmm.gov.my/

Tell them about your experiences with broadband services in other countries.

    TQ.
