Should we maintain our HK server?

Our Hong Kong server is one of our most expensive servers but we have noticed that utilization is rather low.  We are contemplating dropping it in favour of other servers and as such want to see how you our customers feel about it.

The main purpose of the HK server is for:

a) Smoother surfing to Chinese sites or accessing China content (especially for Malaysians)

b) PPS Streaming

Do let us know in the blog comments section if you want HK server to remain or if you have any suggestions to improve it. If we get enough interest expressed we’ll keep the HK server running!

maybe you could consider allowing p2p or torrents on it as well? That would help with the slow chinese torrents.

  2. tcmean says:

Yes, I love it. Considering the slowness that everyone experiencing while surfing/streaming from China, it’s definitely needed.

  3. rmkbrj says:

I use only fully routed sites so HK is not important to me.

  4. s says:

we need constant affordable privacy protection and circumventing in Turkey. i never use chinese sites. i’d like it dropped.

  5. Aman says:

    Yes maintain

  6. Tom says:

If HK server is too expensive to maintain, can you get a China mainland server instead. I think a proxy server in the south-east Asian region is needed for sure, but I want to be able to download using the server as well, not just steaming. PPS is not the best steaming service, Qiyi is in China. But Qiyi requires a Mainland IP address.

Honestly, the stuff I use BolehVPN for, I don’t rely on the HK server at all. In fact I didn’t even notice when you guys first introduced it. I tried it a couple times but I can live without it. It’s a good to have option but if I had to factor in savings, I would gladly let them go since the money saved can be spent on further improving the other sites / servers / services that we use on a more regular basis.

    All the best!

i’ve actually used it a couple of times. definitely speed up browsing to HK and China websites like Baidu, especially during the summer holidays there. but other foreign servers can do it too, but maybe just a weebit slower.
never try it with PPS streaming or even website so far though.
but since this HK server a surfing-streaming server (where bandwidth is expensive), that’s why i hardly use it. whenever i want to torrent, i can’t use it, right? so that’s why i’m always connected to either proxy or fully-routed server, where i can browse AND torrent at the same time.

  9. Jason says:

The server works extremely well for streaming to be honest. I had almost zero lag and no issues streaming content from Hong Kong.

  10. Sky says:

The reason I come in to BolehVPN is becos it is a local VPN service with a HK server. I do 90% of my surfing on China websites, and play mostly China Web games. Unfortunately, the connection speed from my VIP5 UniFi to the HK server is extremely slow. It is so much slower then even the Surf/Stream server in US. If it remain the case, there is no point to keep the HK server as it is extremely slow that make the webgames unplayable. I think it is great to have the HK server as most Chinese Malaysian use PPS or PPTV, and a server at HK will also bypassing the Great-Firewall of China yet maintain a great speed to the outside world. But the bottom line is, the connection speed has to be improved. It might be the reason why the utilization is low, because it is too slow. Do a connection speed test to and see for yourself. The flash game can’t even loaded up via HK server.

i am interested on server in mainland china as most of my p2p needs is from china. of course ping low is good.

  12. noone says:

You should also get rid of Luxumburg. It kicks me off the internet everytime.

  13. Edwin says:

I dont use HK server at all. So i say take it off.

I read a comment about someone getting rid of the Luxembourg route. That would be the worst move ever. Luxembourg has the best privacy laws of all the routes offered by Boleh. It would be the route to use for the most anonymity. I never use the Hong Kong route, but I can’t say get rid of it unless it can be replaced with a server in another area that will accomplish the same needs of Boleh customers. Maybe look into Mainland China or another Asian country. If it is decided it is not worth the cost then use that money on fully routed routes in Sweden or the Netherlands. It would be awesome if we had routes in both Sweden, and Netherlands! I myself only use fully routed routes.

  15. vinson says:

Could you guys replace the HK server with China mainland server?
