Batman Arkham Asylum 'The Way it's Meant to be Played' on Nvidia cards … or is it really?

techpowerup! has reported that Anti-Aliasing (one of the most basic image enhancements in any game) is only enabled in Batman Arkham Asylum on Nvidia cards. ATI confirmed this by doing tests in their labs where they changed the ID of their GPU to emulate a Nvidia card which then turned AA on again.

Bug or intentional foul play? You decide.

Read about it straight from AMD’s Ian McNaughton here.

Those video cards manufacturers are just using us(consumer) as lab rat to test out their sub-standard card. They issue high power consumption without concern on the efficiency. When will the really ‘cool’ good card with excellent power efficiency come out. Most of the video card is so hot you can cook eggs on it, we have to pay extra to get a water cooling system in order to cool down the card properly. Cooler card last longer as the semiconductor in the card will last longer. Maybe the manufacturers purposely to built the card hotter so that it’ll damage exactly after the warranty so people will have to replace their cards.

albon: Those that need powerful graphics cards are mostly gamers where power and temperature efficiency is not one of their priorities. And in fact I believe ATI has been giving some serious thought in reducing its power draw mainly for the fact that if their GPU is too power hungry, then most users will not have an appropriately rated PSU to run it.

Cards are generally designed to work in those hot temperatures and it’s actually very seldom to see a graphics card breakdown under regular use in its lifecycle. We’re not expecting gfx cards to last a lifetime, maybe some 5 years or so by which time the card would be really obsolete.

5 years ago…the best card out there was the 9800XT and the 5950 Ultra.

Btw if all you need is just power efficiency and cool operation then just stick with Intel’s integrated solutions which are ok for non-gaming purposes 😀

I just finished that game yesterday… freaking awesome game, props to Eidos! But if this AA thing is deliberate, that would be uncool man, I’m running on an 8800GT, AA at 2X, never knew ATI cards had this problem..

I bought a 9800XT card when it first came out 5 years ago for a whopping RM 1899. It’s been running 24/7 and hasn’t failed me till today. The stock fan died and I replaced it with a 3rd party cooling system and it still runs fine for older games within its specifications. I’m not planning to upgrade it until it dies as I mainly use my PC for work and file storage 😀

I was gonna buy this game to support the developers, but after learning about this TWIMTBP nonsense, I’ll pass.

Shame; it was such a nice game to play.
