MegaUpload Arrested?

Megaupload, the company that brought you tons of copyrighted material online, endorsed by many celebrities and musicians, has been shut down. Its execs have been detained, arrested, and just recently granted bail. The U.S. wants to bring them in for sentencing, but then again so does every country that has a history of protecting the entertainment industry’s rights.

Kim Dotcom (Kim Schmitz), the mastermind behind Megaupload, is well known for his scrapes with the law, as well as his lavish lifestyle. So far, copyright infringement has been a highly polemical issue, but this is perhaps the biggest case to date. Although his site has been taken down, there are talks of Megaupload suing the FBI for taking down and losing legal files on the site.

Online protestor/hackers Anonymous retaliated by taking down a slew of government websites, but it is still unclear how the rest of internet users plan on taking action, if any at all. Either way, this will be an interesting case to watch, and one which will doubtlessly create a hallmark for future online piracy cases.
