India joins USA in comms monitoring

Late last year, India announced a new Central Monitoring System, which will offer the authorities a way to eavesdrop on all online activities, telephone calls and text messages.

This move comes without parliamentary approval and will have grave consequences for activism, as the Indian authorities have a history of using sedition laws to arrest critics and clamp down on content online.

Not much information is available on who will have access to the system, how it will be used and what safeguards are in place. In fact, India has no privacy protection laws, but then you wouldn’t care about that as you have nothing to hide, right citizen?
