We would like to wish everyone a Happy Winter Solstice Festival (Dongzhi) ! The Winter Solstice is a time for family to get together and to put them at the forefront. The festival signifies the ‘extreme of winter’ and as such past this date, daylight will become longer and Chinese often believe this signifies positive energy flowing in! It is one of the most important festivals for the Chinese (perhaps rivaled only by the Chinese New Year in the coming spring).
In traditional Chinese society, the arrival of winter meant that the farmers would lay down their tools and celebrate the harvest by coming home to their families. A feast would be prepared to mark the occasion.
Nowadays, Chinese celebrate by eating “tang yuan” with family which is basically glutinous rice flour. Anyone know what’s the origins of tradition of eating tang yuan?
