3. Making Sense of the Different Configurations
You will have noticed several configuration files.
- PrivateTracker (proxied)
- PublicTracker (proxied)
- BolehRoute (fully-routed)
- US-Surfing-Streaming (fully-routed)
They each have their specific purpose so it is very important to read through this section carefully. BolehVPN is one of the few VPNs that offer such a wide range of options all in one package.
As illustrated below, when you right click the icon, you be presented with several options:

a. PrivateTracker/PublicTracker (Proxied VPN)
PrivateTracker / PublicTracker (Proxied VPN)
All these configurations are in a proxied setup which means you only choose what program uses the VPN. Any program you do not specify to go through the VPN will go through your regular connection. See Step 4 for configuration of programs for BolehVPN when you are ready.
Please note that these configurations use no cipher but are still encrypted using SSL.
PrivateTracker configuration contains servers located in UK or Canada which work well with private trackers. Experiment on which gives you a better speed! These servers will NOT work successfully on public trackers (for e.g. PirateBay, Mininova, EZTV, etc). These servers will tend to give better speeds on private trackers.
PublicTracker configuration contains Canadian/Luxembourg servers which are recommended for public tracker use such as Piratebay/Mininova but try to avoid using these before trying to obtain your file from a private tracker or a more reputable source.
Pros
- Most redundant since most of our servers are configured in this way. Therefore even if one or two servers go down, you will still be able to use this service.
-
Does not affect other latency sensitive applications like MSN/surfing/gaming therefore you can do all your other tasks without feeling any slowdown.
-
Works well for most purposes and well seeded torrents
-
Uses premium bandwidth
-
Optimized for P2P
Cons
- You will not be fully connectable and will appear as firewalled. This is inevitable as it uses a proxy. This might reduce your ability to connect to peers and is relevant when the seeder/peer ratio is bad or there are very few people on the torrent. This also gives you LowID with Emule
-
Requires the program you wish to pass through the VPN to have Socks Proxy support and be configured appropriately.
-
Does not employ encryption on data so is not suitable for sensitive information. It still is however reasonably secure for most people. Read here for further details.
b. BolehRoute:
bolehroute.ovpn (Fully Routed VPN)
BolehRoute is different in which everything is automatically routed to the VPN. Everything including surfing, browsing, MSNing and any programs that use the internet will have their communications go through the VPN.
You need not configure your programs to use the VPN if you use BolehRoute.
Pros
- Full connectability from ports 1024-65000, with no firewalled status
- While connected BolehRoute, you get a dedicated IP that only you are using while connected to the VPN. This IP will be recycled when you disconnect.
-
Good for programs like Emule/SoulSeek which is highly dependent on full connectability
-
Good for computers dedicated to downloading
-
Offers a degree of privacy/security for your internet enabled applications
-
Painless setup since once you are connected to the VPN, you need not configure anything else
-
May work better with poorly seeded trackers
- Encrypted with 128 bit Blowfish. Read here for further details.
Cons
- Increases latency on all other applications that means surfing, MSN and everything else that uses the internet will have a longer reponse time due to the additional route your internet connection has to take.
-
Only three servers to use. (may change with sufficient demand)
If you don't know what all this means, just stick with BolehVPN and leave BolehRoute aside. Both solutions are offered to you at no extra cost unlike other providers. We give you the best value and the appropriate solution for any situation with these two setups.
c. US Server for Surfing/Streaming only (No P2P)
US-SurfingStreaming.ovpn
The SurfingStreaming is a US server which CANNOT be used for P2P but is especially good for streaming US only content such as Hulu, Pandaro and Veoh or surfing anonymously since it has added privacy features.
You need not specify a proxy for this and it works similarly like BolehRoute in which you just connect to it and start surfing! This configuration is also encrypted with 128 bit Blowfish.
