Luxembourg and Swiss server issues

The Luxembourg based BRLU01-04 is currently down due to a datacenter outage. We’ll post an update when it’s back up.

Also currently the Swiss servers may be experiencing some instability due to issues with the host’s upstream providers:

We are experiencing problems with several of our upstream providers in Europe at the moment due to some fiber cuts between Amsterdam and London.  We are receiving partial BGP tables from Hurricane Electric and TINET causing routing issues to certain parts of the world.  While the network is up at the moment, you will see some instability due to the shifting routes.

We have tickets open with both these providers, and expect for this to be solved shortly, though neither can give us a solid time frame.

Thank you for your kind patience and understanding. The Christmas elves are working overtime on it. :D

Merry Christmas and some big changes at BolehVPN

Merry Christmas everyone!

We’re undergoing some major revamps in our service which would require a global configuration change.

Implementing Encryption

We started out as a VPN provider whose main aim was to bypass traffic shaping and with a strong emphasis on speed. This worked out well for our initial bunch of customers but we have recognized a growing need for additional security. This is especially so as government and ISPs have begun eroding into our privacy and monitoring connections. Furthermore, the added overhead data is minimal at about 5%.

We also conducted a survey in which 72% of users wanted encryption implemented on the Proxied servers.

  1. As such, we have decided to do two things:
Implement Blowfish encryption on the Proxied Servers. With this change all our VPN servers are now encrypted
  2. Implement tls-auth on all our servers which adds another layer of security

We intend to have these changes rolled out on Christmas day 25th September 2011 Sunday 0:00 GMT+8.

To implement these two steps requires a global configuration change. For those of you on BolehVPN-GUI, this should be simple and a simple hit of Update Configuration would work. For those of you on other installations, would need a download a new set of configuration files and an additional key.

We’ll post a detailed link to install at our blog when we implement the change.

DD-WRT

DD-WRT router support will also be implemented in our new configuration changes and an updated guide will be posted. This has been tricky to do previously since there are so many versions of DD-WRT and because of our multiple configuration setup.

Other Changes

We’re conducting other upgrades to our backend with a website revamp and an ordering process revamp to improve the user experience. We also intend to fully support Paypal subscriptions so that users do not need to manually renew their subscriptions every month. A support ticketing system is also in the works.

We’re also implementing a whole slew of other minor changes based on user feedback and a full list of implemented features will be posted once we have finalized them.

Once again, thank you for your understanding and continued support of BolehVPN!

Should the Proxied configurations be encrypted?

We’ve reached a point where privacy is becoming more and more important and there’s been some customers who have requested for us to implement encryption on the proxied-all configurations. We were previously not in favor of this since we felt that the Fully Routed options served the privacy purpose and that the Proxied configurations retained their speed advantage but removing encryption while maintaining a certain degree of anonymity but are now taking a second look at this policy in view of more intrusive governments/ISPs.

If we implement encryption, speeds on the Proxied servers will drop by about 5-10% due to encryption overhead but in return you’ll get Blowfish 128 bit encryption on your data. This would also require a global configuration change and more resources on our part to keep these servers running.

If we don’t implement encryption, anything that passes through the proxy servers will just be socks5 encapsulated but have no encryption meaning someone who is determined can examine the content of the data passing through.

Thus we would like to hear your thoughts on these before we go about this drastic change.

Two Fully Routed UK Servers Decommissioned

We have removed two servers from the FullyRouted-UK configuration. This is due to change of policies of the hosting provider making it not sustainable with this hosts. We’ll source for replacements if required but capacity is well over what we need at the moment.

It is highly recommended to update your configurations to remove these decommissioned servers.

We also may be doing a wide revamp of configurations to allow DD-WRT support but will post on this at a later date once a decision has been made.

If you are on BolehVPN-GUI, this is an easy process. Just hit the button Update Config and it will do it all automatically.

If you’re not on BolehVPN-GUI or are a Mac/Linux user, head on to our configuration file page and follow the instructions there. Don’t forget to edit the files to use your username!

3 New Fully Routed Luxembourg Servers added

We have added 3 new fully routed Luxembourg Servers all with dedicated IPs .

We’ll be weaning off the Fully Routed Netherlands servers as they are operating on Shared IPs and does not have open port status.

We’ve also updated the Swiss Fully Routed image so it reflects it’s from Switzerland.
