TM Announcement: Internet Services Disruption due to Cable Works on SMW4

Statement from TM:

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that its consortium members have detected cable faults on the South East Asia Middle East Western Europe (SMW4) submarine cable networks linking Malaysia to Europe (EU). The consortium will be carrying out repair works on site on Friday, 29 October 2010 and the works are expected to be completed on Tuesday, 2 November 2010.

During the restoration process, there may be some interruption to traffic to the Europe, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Thailand carried through the cable networks.

Customers using Internet, data and telephony services nationwide may experience some degree of service degradation such as slow browsing and high latency while accessing international websites hosted in the Europe. Customers using TM International Direct Dial (IDD) and Toll Free telephony services, Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to the Europe, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Thailand may experience some level of service degradation.

TM will provide necessary updates on the progress of the restoration works, and would like to elicit feedback from our customers on the quality of service experienced.

We apologize for any inconveniences caused by this disruption, whilst at the same time, would like to assure customers that we are undertaking all necessary measures to ensure that customers experience uninterrupted service.

TM wishes to thank its customers for their understanding and patience during the affected period. Meanwhile, customers can call TM at 100 and select “Technical Assistance” or e-mail us at help@tm.com.my for any Internet related problems.

Rumour: Unifi capping in testing?

I have received several reports that Unifi has started testing capping of download speed for those that exceed their download quotas but as of now this is not substantiated. Also, a thread on Lowyat forums indicate that capping may start on the 1 January 2011 and in some areas it appears to be throttled at night.

Once again this is all purely speculation and it may be that just TM is having problems with their international connectivity, but it is probably worth waiting a bit till January to see the truth of such rumours.

Reason for Ipt being disabled found: excessive comments

Apparently some idiots were spamming comments and asking for freeleech on every torrent. First of all this is silly considering the account is already freeleech. Secondly no one should be posting excessively long comments if any at all. This is a shared account so just enjoy it and hush. :)

Account has been recovered but will only release details later today or Monday so people have time to read the notice.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

FireSheep, hijacking Facebook accounts and how BolehVPN can help you

What is FireSheep?

Firesheep is a new Firefox plugin that makes it easy for someone to hijack your social network connections (for e.g. Facebook/Twitter) over a public unsecured WIFI connection. It does this by ‘sniffing’ for your cookies and captures your authentication information for accounts it sees, allowing the ‘hacker’ to hijack the connection.
What does this Mean to You?

Although this is nothing new, Firesheep makes it exceedingly easy for anyone with a little computer knowledge to hijack someone’s social network account potentially allowing a FireSheep user to view all your information on your Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr and Yelp.
How can BolehVPN Help?

Our completed encrypted fully routed connections will prevent this (BolehRoute/US-SurfingStreaming) as it will encrypt all your data making FireSheep unable to intercept your data. So the next time, you’re surfing through Facebook in a public wi-fi area for instance Starbucks/Coffee Bean, make sure that either
  1. Your Wi-fi is secured with WEP/WPA protection (WPA2 is preferable); or
  2. use BolehRoute or US-SurfingStreaming while in these locations.

US-Surfing Streaming to undergo upgrade tonight

There will be a short 1 hour maintenance on US-SurfingStreaming to add firewall bypass capability to the US-SurfingStreaming server. This will happen from 10PM-11PM GMT+8 on the 28th October 2010 (today). During this time, you may have difficulties connecting to this configuration until all works have been completed.

Luxembourg back up (not a datacentre issue but a TM issue)

There appears to be an intermittent TM issue that’s causing loss of connectivity to certain Europe servers due to a problem with their connectivity to Global Crossing.

For the moment, all connectivity has been restored but we have our fingers crossed.

TM Issue causing connectivity problems to Euro Servers

It appears it is not Luxembourg having issues but TM. Taken from our support ticket:

I do see some problems coming from Telecom Malaysia though. It looks like they are having severe issues with Global Crossing.

Looks like TM is having some connectivity problems with Europe.

Luxembourg Problems Again

Luxembourg issues are happening again and right now their whole datacenter appears to be down and we are unable to contact them. We’ll keep you posted. If you have updated your configuration files, rerouting to other free servers should be automatically happening. If it’s not it’s possible the servers are full.

We are still evaluating whether to merge the PrivateTracker and PublicTracker configurations into one config.

You can obtain the latest configuration files by:

  2. After activating your forum account, login and apply for Support Access. (only if you haven’t done so))
  3. Wait for it to be approved. You will receive an e-mail when this has been done. This is to ensure that only approved subscribers get the new configurations.
  4. Now head on to the BolehVPN Config Files thread while logged on and follow the steps in the first post.
