Reuben will be very busy over the next week or so

A couple of you may have noticed that I have been less active as of late and Pit Boss and Chris have been taking over most duties. My day job’s workload has increased tremendously and I hope to have it resolved by the end of the next week.

I will also be engaging a full time staff for trial purposes who shall man the Live Support channel along with other support duties. She will be briefed sometime this Tuesday. Thank you for your kind understanding.

Ragnarok 2 (or is it 2.5) going into closed Beta

I don’t know how many of you had played the original Ragnarok Online but it was back in the days before the likes of World of Warcraft were around (2003). It was amazingly cute 2D sprites had really nice music and happy colors. It was amazingly grindy as most Asian games were at that time, but it was my first experience to a MMO and have fond memories playing it.

So understandably when Ragnarok 2 was announced and I heard Yoko Kanno (from Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Escaflowne) was doing the soundtrack, I was absolutely stoked. Unfortunately Ragnarok 2 never really got past Korea with poor reception and a company riddled with scandal involving siphoning of company’s funds. In fact Ragnarok Online 2 SEA which was promoted heavily by Asiasoft had mysteriously disappeared and along with it all hope of seeing Ragnarok 2 outside Korea (which was probably just as well with the poor reception and outdated Unreal engine).

Going through some old mp3s reminded me of my good old days in Ragnarok Online and I decided to see what had happened to the beloved franchise and was surprised that there are some stirrings of a revival:

In a statement in December last year Global Business Manager Yunghun Lee had this to say:

“It’s a difficult question to answer,” Lee admitted. “We launched Ragnarok II in 2007. That version wasn’t really enough for the market, so we tried to revise all the systems, but it takes time. We changed the engine and everything, it’s like a totally new game. The engine changed several times, but now we’re using Gamebryo.”

The game is nearing completion now, and Lee says “We’re going to release the game next year.”

The Closed Beta of Ragnarok 2 (Legend of the Second) is scheduled to begin on the 31st August in Korea next year and although few details have emerged, it is clear that Gravity is intending to go back to the game’s roots. One can only wait and see whether it will turn out to be another dud or success which will be especially more challenging now that the Asian population has been exposed to the big boys ala World of Warcraft and plenty of competition (Aion).

Fingers crossed and here’s some gorgeous screenshots. Let’s hope that at least they have removed the grinding..or more importantly it even sees the light of day outside Korea.

Kesian Pitboss/Rainbow6

Today after receiving some positive customer reviews mostly directed at me although PitBoss/Rainbow6 had a big part to play in resolving those issues, he sent me a very cute BBM:

“Kesian pitboss/rainbow6, no one compliment him, lol”

So let’s compliment the unsung hero of BolehVPN, who works tirelessly behind the scenes to resolve technical issues and complaints that us mere mortals cannot comprehend.

New Canada Surfing Streaming

We had a user that just needed to watch CBC Canada shows and as such had configured a custom configuration for him to have a fully routed Canadian server for surfing/streaming Canadian content. We have now decided to make this available to you at no extra charge. Rules are the same as the US-SurfingStreaming server. This is a server for surfing/streaming and not for P2P/Bittorrent, etc.

All new subscriptions will come with this configuration while existing users can add this configuration by going to our forum here after logging in and having their support access approved.

Debate over Unifi priority over Streamyx in Parliament

I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions from this video.
Frankly it makes me feel sad in more ways than one.

The Last Airbender Movie Review

First a bit of background info on the animation that the movie is based on.

Avatar the Last Airbender the Animation is probably ranks up there as one of the most fun animations I had the pleasure of watching. It had likeable characters that had history and personality, cool martial arts, an imaginative world and really pew pew elemental powers. It was clever and the artwork design was well thought out, really reflecting the different nation’s powers and culture.

The movie on the other hand, isn’t remotely on par with the animation.

First of all, avoid the 3D experience at all costs! The Last Airbender movie was never intended for 3D  (it was converted from 2D) and this is shown both with the lack of depth given by the 3D glasses along with several portions of the movie where the glasses made the scene too dark to observe what was going on. Clear rip off here.

Secondly the acting…oh gawd…I wasn’t really expecting any Oscar winning performances here but the stiffness of it was really really unbearable. Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire is probably the only recognizable actor but all sense of depth of Zukko’s character went out of the window. However, perhaps the actors are not solely to blame as the juvenile script was cringe-worthy:

Aang: Earthbenders! Why are you acting this way? You are powerful and amazing people! You don’t need to live like this! There is earth right beneath your feet! The ground is an extension of who you are!

It is amazing to think that the same person who came up with Sixth Sense came up with this drivel…

Aang was also a huge disappointment and seemed to be picked solely because he had the same build and did good martial arts. Although Aang in the animation wasn’t an inspirational character and was more of the “Avatar next door that you grow to like”, you could see how people would rally to his cause. Aang in the movie just seemed like a little bawling kid begging for attention.

General Iroh, one of my favorite characters in the animation  is also not the likeable, lazy and jovial Uncle he was in the animation. In the movie, he was merely the fatherly figure and the ‘voice of reason’ which took all the charm out of the amiable fallen general.

Now the main draw of this movie should have been its elemental effects but although they looked decent, they seemed dated and artificial. The elemental powers moved clumsily especially the earth element that looked more like…slowly levitating foam balls rather than rocks. The kungfu forms were cool enough to make me consider doing Tai -chi for fun and to a certain extent true to the animation, they seem contrived as it did not flow with the elemental powers. In the animation, the elements moved in close unity with the kungfu movements with no long ‘power-up katas’, but here it seems like an eternity for any element to be summoned which had more of a Dragonball feel to it. Except…without the awesome fireballs… Element bending was meant to be effortless and an extension of the user, not something to be summoned.

Without spoiling the story, the animation’s ending of Book 1 was also a whole lot more engaging and had a real epic feel to it. There was real tension there. Instead, the movie’s ‘climax’ felt more like a cross between a poor man’s Battle of Helm’s Deep and the ocean effects of the movie “2012″.

For all of Shyamalan’s efforts, the movie seems to have tried to condense what was a rich world into purely a kid’s movie which is a real shame considering the animation’s broad appeal among all age groups.

Would I recommend watching the Last Airbender movie? Hmm…only if you must…otherwise  just watch the movie’s trailer which has all the cool effects in it already (really…anything worth seeing in the movie was in the trailer) and then head straight on to the animation!

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that a sequel to the animation Avatar: the Legend of Korra is in the works and set for release in 2011. The screenshots are amazing and the promise of a more mature and a bit darker Avatar universe has us Avatar fans hopeful again.
