Update on Streamyx Node Failure

TM has posted this announcement. Note that although the note only mentions Sandakan, generally a failure in one place affects other places as well as traffic is diverted and becomes congested which has been confirmed for at least the E. Malaysia region.

Dear Valued Customers,

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) wishes to announce that restoration works of its services in the eastern part of Sabah due to a fire that occurred at its TM exchange in Sandakan on Monday is currently ongoing, with priority given to essential services like hospitals, banks, the police, the fire and rescue departments, as well as the Sandakan airport.

Some communications services have been restored in stages since Wednesday in Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and surrounding areas. All Metro-E circuits are also currently up and running. At the moment, close to 50% of its affected infrastructure are already restored. TM expects most of the affected circuits to be restored by Sunday, 2 August 2009.

Most TM customers in Sandakan are now able to make local, national (STD) and international (IDD) telephone calls. Fixed telephone line calls from outside of Sandakan can now be delivered to the users at the affected areas in Sandakan.

In the meantime, TM has already restored Streamyx services for about 90% of its customers in Sandakan and 80% of its customers in Tawau. Meanwhile, Streamyx service in Lahad Datu is expected to be fully restored by tomorrow.

TM apologizes for any inconvenience caused whilst at the same time wishes to assure its customers that it is undertaking all necessary measures, including round-the-clock works, to restore communications services for its customers as soon as possible. TM would also like to thank its customers for their understanding and patience during this affected period.

TM has set up several emergency hotlines in Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu to field enquiries from the public. Customers in Sandakan can contact (089) 622 423, (089) 622 134 and (089) 246 111, whereas the hotline numbers in Kota Kinabalu are (088) 264 803 and (088) 264 837. Customers can also call TM at 100 or e-mail us at help@tm.com.my for any service related problems.

Thank You.

Gilbert and Reuben out at Starbucks

Gilbert and Reuben are out at Starbucks catching up so there will be a slight delay in keygen but will processed in an hour or so.

Enjoy the photo!

Btw…cashier at the Starbucks was sneaky getting Gilbert to order all the extras like syrup and chocolate chips and what not without telling him it would cost more. That drink cost him RM15.00 excluding tax. Pushy baristas for the lose!

Update: All keys should be out now :D

Streamyx Node Failure

After speaking to one of the higher ups who was very well informed on the situation (how refreshing!) and familiar with TM’s network topology, he has informed me that there’s been a node failure early today in one of the 4 nodes that connects E. Malaysia to W. Malaysia resulting in high network congestion.

He also confirms that most of Malaysia will be experiencing some network congestion and that restoration works are taking place. I didn’t enquire if this slowness was caused by the node failure.

One of the benefits of opening a SKMM report! You get better quality tech support rather than the front liners.

Update:

TM has an official explanation for at least the E.Malaysia side of things

Dear Valued Customers,

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) would like to inform its customers in Sabah that it is currently experiencing a disruption of services in Eastern Sabah due to a fire that occurred at its TM Exchange in Sandakan, Sabah.

As a result, customers using TM’s voice, Internet and Data services such as Telephony, Leased Circuit, Data IPVPN, Metro-E, TM Direct and Streamyx/DSL in eastern Sabah in Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Sempoerna and surrounding areas will experience service disruptions.

TM is currently assessing the damage and restoration works on the affected exchange will begin once the assessment has been completed. TM will make further announcements on the progress of the restoration works.

TM wishes to assure customers that it is undertaking all necessary measures to restore communications services as soon as possible.

Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail us at help@tm.com.my for any Internet related problems.

Thank You.

Streamyx Routing Issues cropping up

There appears to be a proportion of users who have lost connectivity to certain of our servers and are getting high intermittent connections.

I have looked into this matter and it seems that Streamyx has issues with their routing today since this morning resulting in even some international sites refusing to load or timing out as if they aren’t there.

BolehRoute Abuse

We have noticed a single user that is generating some 50,000 connections on BolehRoute which is clogging the server up.

We are performing tests to identify this user and terminate him. This would explain the slowdowns BolehRoute faces from time to time.

Bolehroute #1 Upgrade

This is a short notice to say that we will be upgrading the BolehRoute 1 server over the next few days and this may result in a short downtime while the new hardware is being installed.

23 July 2009

Update 12:22AM: The server is now currently being upgraded. New hardware is in and configuring the OS.

Update 12:30AM: The server is now up and operational again. We are still monitoring it and seeing if it is stable with the new configuration/hardware. A few reboots may be done but is not forseen.

Streamyx Recovery

It appears that on certain routes at least, Streamyx has recovered from yesterday’s slowdown. Luxembourg and Canadian server pings are back into normal ranges again.

Please post your comments to confirm the same or if you are still experiencing problems!

Suspected Streamyx Slowdown Affecting some Connections

We have noticed a general drop in speed starting at about 2AM GMT+8 20 July 2009 which appears to affect our Canadian and Luxembourg servers. UK also showed a slight dip during the same time

We suspect a Streamyx routing issue as the Canadian and Luxembourg servers are hosted in totally different places and to have a drop on both at the same time indicates a Streamyx rather than a host problem but we are working to confirm this.

You may view our Server Status page for full details.

Update: We have pinged our Luxembourg and Canadian servers from other parts of the world which returned perfect results which indicates a Streamyx routing issue.
